FACT Magazine - Phase Fatale teaches track-making 22m 28s

About this lesson

In-depth, behind-the-scenes look at how Hayden Payne aka Phase Fatale, a Berghain resident, makes a track.

An unusual take on how to make Techno, Phase Fatale explores the methods of the CIA and their use of sub frequencies to induce concussion and translates that into his music for big sound systems in Berghain (where he is a resident DJ). Referencing Adrian Sherwood as an inspiration for building his tracks, he guides us through his processes, using Machine Drum, Analog modelling with 808, taking instrument waveforms to create varied synthesis, pitching drum and synth lines in key, Eventide H3000 for delay effects, programming through TR8 drum machine, Synthesiser ES1, Lo pass to hi pass filters, subverting norms, panning, and his signature sounds and sample styles.

Phase Fatale is a Berghain favourite, a Techno/EBM authentic, coming from a post-punk and cold wave evolution. In more recent times, he has favoured a slower tempo for maximum effect of every element. His method is precise and endlessly creative.
